Making a Beautiful Hardwood Floor
Hardwood refinishing is the process of repairing minor nicks, dents, scratches, and other surface blemishes in a hardwood floor, creating a more beautiful, smoother, and longer-lasting finish. It’s a three-step process that’s often made up of sanding, filling, and painting. While the result is a highly durable finish, refinishing is not a simple task that comes without its fair share of challenges including working with highly abrasive and toxic chemicals, and using equipment that can be dangerous to the inexperienced. But with a few practice runs and careful attention to detail, anyone can achieve professional results.
Below are 3 of the refinishing tips and techniques that can save you time, and money, and help you work more safely to make a beautiful hardwood floor.
Use the Right Mops and Pails
The first thing you want to do, when you refinish your hardwood floors, is to mop them. This will remove dust, dirt, and debris from the floor. You will then want to use pails or buckets which are used to soak up the water from your mop. You also want to make sure that you use the right kind of mop for hardwood floors, as too soft a mop can scratch these floors when you’re scrubbing.
Use the Right Cleaner
After you’ve cleaned your floors, you will want to use a cleaner and/or conditioner. You can either use a water-based cleaner or a regular full-strength cleaner. You will then want to apply the cleaner or conditioner, using a clean mop, and mop the entire floor, paying attention to the high-traffic areas. You can then either leave the floor to sit, or you can rinse it with clean water immediately after.
Before you begin to refinish your hardwood floors, you first have to perform a few prepping steps to make the refinishing process run smoothly. Remove any furniture that’s still lying on the floors. This personalizes the area so refinishing is just dealing with your new floors, not the old ones. Stain the old hardwood floors to match the new ones. One way to do this is to apply the stain and let it dry and then sand it afterward. This will even out the color and increase the durability of the finish.
